Mavs Gaming attends annual QuakeCon event

As one of the largest eSports conferences in the world, QuakeCon took place in Dallas over the weekend where thousands of gamers poured into Dallas.

The official QuakeCon website describes the website as follows:

“QuakeCon is an annual celebration of games and the people who play them. Founded in 1996 by a group of friends on IRC, QuakeCon has grown to become one of the most distinguished festivals in gaming, welcoming thousands of gamers from around the globe to participate in the annual four-day event. QuakeCon features North America’s largest BYOC (Bring-Your-Own-Computer) LAN Party, tournaments, exhibits, workshops, sneak peeks of Bethesda’s upcoming games, and more. QuakeCon is free and open to the public thanks to the support of id Software, Bethesda Softworks, the QuakeCon volunteer staff, and its event sponsors and exhibitors.”

The conference took place at the Gaylord Texas and consisted of numerous events and speakers. In the BYOC conference room, hundreds of gamers brought in their own gaming consoles and monitors to game alongside each other in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.

The Exhibit Hall portion of the Gaylord Texas was reserved for exhibitor booths promoting products, brands and upcoming games. Tucked into a booth beside the prestigious Alienware software was none other than Mavs Gaming.

“Since Dallas is the central hub for QuakeCon, Mavs Gaming has an opportunity to capitalize on the local market and let people know we have an NBA2K team and event space,” Trey Christenson, the new director of eSports for the Dallas Mavericks said.

Inside the Mavs Gaming booth sat two Microsoft stations where fans could sit down and play NBA 2K18 against each other. There was also a monitor on display playing video clips of the Mavs Gaming team throughout the year.

For many fans, snagging some free Mavs Gaming gear was a top priority.

“Everybody wants Dallas Mavericks gear,” Christenson said. Just in the first day alone, the Mavs Gaming team handed out over 300 Mavs Gaming shirts to fans stopping by.

“A lot of what these cons do is give you the ability to connect with people internationally,” Christenson said. “We were just talking to a guy from China who travels internationally helping eSports grow.”

With the new, over 20,000 square foot eSports facility newly renovated in Dallas, the Mavericks have endless possibilities for the events that could potentially take place in the new facility.

The Dallas Mavericks are still planting seeds in the eSports community and events like QuakeCon only help that long-term goal. When I asked Christenson how many people probably attend an event like QuakeCon, it was a number I didn’t expect.

“At least 10,000 people,” he said.
